Do You Have What it Takes to Work From Home?

It seems like everyone wants to telecommute these days. After all, what could be better than working in your pajamas? You roll out of bed, grab some coffee, and you're ready to go. No more rush-hour traffic. And just think of the savings on gas alone.

But not everyone has the right personality to work from home. Successful telecommuters tend to be very self-motivated. It's hard to make yourself work when the remote control is close at hand, the phone is ringing, or your children are demanding your attention.

Telecommuters also must have above average time management and organizational skills. No one is leaning over your shoulder, making sure the job gets done on time. There is very little supervision.

But most of all, the desire to work from home must be strong. If you need social interaction, if you just live for office gossip and water cooler society, then telecommuting isn't for you. It can be quite isolating. There's also not much positive reinforcement. No one is there to pat you on the back and tell you what a great job you're doing.

Future-trends.com has a quiz to help you determine if telecommuting is right for you. Take it and see whether you are a good candidate for telecommuting. It's an option that can be very rewarding, if it's the right choice for you.

you are so right on here ! I have been self employed for 20 years. Although I have really slowed down my house-cleaning business alot and work more from home than ever, I really like being at home now.

Likewise every thing under the sun, this industry also has its grey shades. But to survive in this by serving your means without exploiting other sis being genius.

What you said about organizational skills is spot on. That's my weakest area. Even though I am a pretty organized person in general, I get Internet ADD and forget what I was doing.

I got retrenched from my ex company when I am 6 mths pregnant with my elder boy (heartless company rite?)...2 yrs at home to take care of the boy.

Then got a home based job by chance when pregnant with the younger boy. But 7 mths into it... my boss complained that the boys are too noisy at home for me to work in peace. So I quitted.

My children are more impt to me... so I guess I better stay at home to take care of them :)

totally agree with you. So many people want to be self-employed or work at home but only a few people has what it takes.

just stopped by to say hi from mybloglog..
Although I've been blogging for two months, it was all in Mandarin Chinese. You are the first one I said Hi in English. Funny!
Anyway, I do work at home: I teach cello and (try to) play with my 4-yr-old. So I guess..count me in your club! Nice site!!!

Hi Lisa, thanks for this uplifting post! I've had ppl telling me how much they "envy" my stress-free work-from-home days when in reality, it's not as easy as they make it out to be!

You're right abt needing the right personality to succeed in this especially the desire bit. Have been working from home for more than 4 years now and am still loving it! :) :)

I would love to be self employed, although, I mean you get to work in your jarmies! Sleep through the time spent showering and doing hair and doing make up.

But it must get lonley at some point, and the social scene probably isnt as good as working in an office.

However it is such a good idea for mums, because it still gives them the oppertunity to earn their own wage and spend time with the kids!
