One of the simplest, low-cost businesses to start from your home is a resume writing business. Most people already have most of the equipment necessary to run this business. So if you're a quick typist with a strong grasp of grammar, this might be the perfect home job for you.
What you'll need:
Computer
Internet access
Printer
Phone
Dictionary (Online will do)
Business cards
File cabinet (Business papers can be stored on your computer, but make sure you have backup.)
A copy of Microsoft Word is invaluable (But other word processing software will do.)
Getting started:
- Register your business with federal, state, and city offices (Check the requirements in your state.)
- Create a client questionnaire with all the pertinent inquiries to help you generate a resume.
- Set up a website for your business with the ability to upload and download files. (Important!)
- Advertise in local newspapers, craigslist, message boards (in signature), etc.
- After each client fills out your questionnaire, interview the person through email, phone, or in person to make sure you have all relevant information.
- Using information obtained, write the resume and cover letter. There are templates available online for resumes. Just Google "resume template," and you will get plenty of results.
- Have the client approve the resume and cover letter. Then either print it and deliver it, or upload it through an ftp server to your client. Alternately, with the client's approval, you can email it as an attachment.
- Bill your client. PayPal has a very handy billing tool that's perfect for this. However, your client will have to sign up on PayPal to pay you this way.

Wow.. how nice shiny and glossy view. Really wonderful place for all to visit.
I think low-cost businesses play an important role in our economics condition.I support this business very much.
My sister-in-law recently had her third child and decided to get out of working her 9to5. she is a writer by trade and did this exact thing -- writing resumes. It's amazing the amount of business one is able to generate with this type of business without even advertising.
99% of her business comes from referrals. It seems there are a lot of people always looking for jobs. and, when one of them scores a new gig with a resume written by my sister in law, then they naturally tell others about it.
No one wants to look dumb with a poorly written resume with bad spelling and grammar, so getting a professional writer/editor to take a look prior to submitting it to a potential employer is good practice.
A typical resume might run the client $100 - $150, depending on what they need.
My sister in law creates about 5 - 10 per month. This is a solid income boost that takes maybe 10 hours per month to do.
Great business idea!
it is on your hand, keep on keeping it.
Your article is fine except for one thing: resume templates are NOT the way to go. They don't help clients because employers can pick them out of a pile from a mile away. And, they won't help you as a resume writer because you won't get referrals from unhappy customers.

Thanks for the tip, Stephanie. I have to believe that if the resume is in the correct format and easy to read, the employer will be concentrating more on the prospect's qualifications, and not worry so much about whether they used a template as a basis to design the resume.
what do you think about resume posting sites like www.theresumerobot.com
during these hard times, it is indeed important for people to think of creative ways on how to generate income. i applaud your efforts in providing tips and tricks on how to crack the work at home business.good job!
this is a very good idea to make a few extra bucks.
i suppose you don't have to limit yourself to resume only. my sister writes essays for college students, that pays pretty well.
Thats a very good and low cost way to make money online.
But what about the saturation as I feel that already there are thousands of websites providing this service?
How to tackle with it?
Any suggestions?
I learned from you and will try on my local business. Thanks.
I would also like to start a resume writing business, very nice information here.
good article but again templates really are not the way to go as each resume and the clients information is unique and should should be framed/written tailored to them
Here is a way to get a thunder of data entry or typing projects.

This is an excellent part time business. You can go nationwide by advertising on Google AdWords for your services. I agree Paypal is the best for payment. You can even load their payment button direct onto your web page or blog. Ther's huge demand for this service, if packaged and marketed right.
I made money while I was in college helping write resumes for my friends and classmates. It wasn't a full time job, but did provide me a little bit of extra income at that point in time.
I think in the present situation where economy is going down, banks close, people start loosing there jobs etc..
Your post is very helpful. During my job i think i can also continue this work as additional income source.
Well i agree with your idea. it is good for the betterment of our young generation.
Nice post! This is really interesting and helpful for many people like me..Thanks for sharing :)
The way of doing business in this article is very interesting.
thanks for sharing this informative content.
I’m really impressed with your article, such great information you mentioned here, thanks for your sharing and waiting to see your future posts.
Wow, great tips. My friends and family are always asking me to help them with their resumes so I've been thinking of doing it as a side gig. It didn't even occur to me that Iid have to register with the state. Good thing I read your post!

I have to agree with the above commenter: resume templates are definitely a bad idea. When I looked into starting a resume business a couple years back, it seemed consistent that resume templates were discouraged. Maybe that’s now changed? Or maybe, one could use them as a guide however to come up with their own preferred layout and format?
You might consider sending readers to Teena’s book (I see she commented above, actually). It’s a great read, and definitely goes into the many topics a new resume writer faces while trying to get their business going.
Entitled “Start, Operate, Profit! The Ultimate Resource for Building a $100,000 Resume-Writing Business”; you can download it at http://www.resumebiz.com.
The book was recently updated to a 3rd edition, btw.
Keep your resume current by revising and updating it before applying for each new position. Tailor it to each employer.
