Having a herb garden and perhaps a herb business has always been a fantasy of mine. I've checked books out at my local library on the subject and perused gourmet store shelves, daydreaming about how much fun it would be to grow my own herbs from home and sell them to restaurants and stores.
And there are only a couple of things standing in my way. Number one: I don't have any sun in my yard. I live in the midst of a tall stand of pines. Number two: I can't keep a plant alive to save myself. I am the original brown thumb.
But I cling to the fantasy. Who knows? Maybe one day I'll have a patch of sunny land, and I can give it a try. In the meantime, if you're good in the garden and have a sunny spot, this is a home business you may want to consider. I found this great article in Mother Earth News that not only details how one woman started a home-based herb business, but also how much she brings in with it and how she does it. It's Start a Home Business with Herbs! I am salivating just reading it. Enjoy!

I was just thinking about this the other day. My herbs are taking over my yard! I don't know if I have a green thumb or a good yard, but I have already preserved enough to get me through the winter and it is only June.
I thought about the herb sales, but I was wondering if there are regulations such as there are with food.
When I first read your post title, I thought this was something the DEA might be interested in. Guess not ;)
That's hilarious "top rated." I hadn't even thought about how people might read that! ;)
We always end up growing more herbs than we can possibly use. Especially now with the hot weather they're really taking off. I'll have to look into this business!
I just wanted to say hi and that this is great blog very informative.. I like browsing through it.. it has some great ideas... and I love that its short and to the point..
Your enthusiasm is great. There still could be herbs you can grow in your garden. A basic book for climatic areas etc is the Sunset Garden book. Easy to find. As for selling there are a number of ways to do that. Here where I live, people sell at Farmer's Markets or if they produce a lot, through a local network we set up called the Sonoma County Herb Exchange, which is part of the Sonoma County Herb Association. Growers either contract with buyers or leave herbs on consignment. It's a great resource. As for that article, yes it was inspiring and I got excited too, until I saw the date - 1979. I have a challenging environment too. Partially in the redwoods. What I have been doing lately, is to learn about what grows wild here and making products from those plants. Such as my Bay Rum/ an after shave and facial toner made from the bay trees that naturally grow here. Good luck
Yes, I saw the article was written a while back. But I still found the information to be very helpful. And I've read a lot of stuff recently that leads me to believe this is still a great home business opportunity, particularly for someone who enjoys gardening. There's nothing better than making money doing something you love.
Yes, absolutely. That's what I'm doing now. You might be interested in looking at my website www.wisewomenofthewest.com

Soon I will be selling a book of recipes for the herbal products featured. They are my own creations.
I wish you will have the opportunity on growing your own garden full of herbs. Wish i had the same passion for it.
Great article, currently i am working on new herbs, hope they can grow fast. Some herb is valuable while some are not, so i have to choose few that work great and harder to grow because it worth more.
Wow, i must say this is new to me. I didnt think growing your own herbs was really that viable. and growing them for business? thats crazy. so crazy i might look into it, seems like a fun hobby, even if the "business" side fails
Interesting idea, but wouldn't you have to grow a heck of a lot of herbs to make a living off of this?
I've been doing some research to grow herbs I cannot find locally right here at home using container gardening. I live in a high rise in the middle of a busy city.. and dont have access to a garden, but i do get plenty of sunlight.
Very interesting idea, thanks for sharing with us.
Thank you for sharing this brilliant idea.
Thank you for sharing this brilliant idea.
Thanks for the great idea.
I have seen people showing more interest in herbal products recently. I want to start this business. I think i can initially start the business with locally available herbs
Great Idea. It would work well for anyone who enjoys growing plants/flowers, etc.
Great work on this article!
Basically find out where you are extremely good. Do it and then make a profits from your business.
My sister and I started an herb business in the early 1990s. We opened our little herbal cottage in a vintage 1930s gas station. We closed after 6 years in business rite before the internet took off. I have always felt that if we would have known and stuck in there a couple more years we would have made it. To me it was a dream come true situation. There are so many aspects of the herbal business, find your place and soar.
So how is your dream of your own herb business almost a year later? Sounds like a fun idea. Like you, I can't seem to keep much alive. I just don't seem to offer enough water and living where I do, that is a must so, I don't grow much anymore. I applaud those who do. All the best.
If I only had enough room in my yard, I would love to set up a full garden!!!
Great idea small cost and relatively high returns i would expect you could sell at craft fairs etc
Great ideas! I love browsing all of your work opportunities, I will definitely refer others to your site!
