If you want to do business on the Web, you must have an Internet presence. But most people have no idea how to build and design a website. That's where a smart entrepreneurial type might find an opportunity for the perfect home-based business. If you're creative and Web-savvy, starting your own web design business could be the perfect startup for you.
The first thing you'll need if you want to sell your web design skills is an Internet presence of your own. And it will be your calling card, so make it look good. Make sure it's perfect. This is where you'll direct potential clients for an example of your work.
Make yourself familiar with other business websites. Design and layout are important, but so is ease of use. Are the sites easy to navigate? Do they positively reflect the service or product they're meant to promote? Are they pleasing to the eye? Make notes about the sites you like, don't like, and why.
Start building a portfolio of work, whether it's building sites for yourself or for a friend or non-profit agency. These references will be important in building your reputation and business. If writing copy isn't your strong suit, consider subcontracting to a professional. Nothing spells unprofessional like a site with misspelled words and incorrect grammar.
Advertise your services on the Internet and in your community. Have business cards printed and drop them off at small businesses in your area. Most business owners have realized the necessity of having a Web presence these days. But many have no idea how to make it happen. That's where you come in.

i've been thinking about doing this, but i have one major question: how does the client update their website after i've designed it? i've designed a site for myself and some family members with businesses, but they have to email me their copy and i update it since they don't own my software. Any insight would be great!

I started my online business...it is just so hard to get started and I have no money to put into the SEO of a new website.
starting own web designs is great...but we need to make sure that we did it very creatively...
i want to start web design business, but I am newbie in webdesign. where I can learn and start my business?
thanks for the info. do you have a good point where I should start if I want to make a photography as business?
@busby seo test: Digital Point forum is the great place for you!
I'm glad I found your inspiring site. Am not a mom yet. But I've made up my mind that I'd want to be a "Work at Home Mom" so I can take care of my family and have my own earning as well.
This is definitely inspiring me to put up my web designs. I wasn't sure since the market seemed so saturated, but I see that they're charging an arm and a leg for them! I think that affordability may make a difference in the presence of premium sites in the near future. Thanks for the post and the inspiration!

Yes, I can't emphasise enough how brilliant the design of your own website must be! Its the main point people will judge your skill by,
What software should you invest in this kind of business? The most basic ones which are really needed in web design.
I think selling a website with a good content and a good traffic is much more profitable than going to web design. There are already many free scripts which can be readily used by anyone to have a web presence.
Great points, it's not an easy business (especially with high maintenance clients) but in the end it's worth it.
Hello,
Wonderful blog posting. All information is too good. I am very glad to your blog.
Thank you for this post extremely useful.
I do web design on the side for several years. Most of the web design houses already have staff to do this. Since your overhead is quite low by working from home, you have a cost advantage. Some lower budget projects will get sent to you. Don't forget to send a letter to all the web design houses in your city.
In todays economy its really worth thinking about. I was reading a post on someone elses blog earlier about an html editor called coffee cup. I don't have a link but google coffee cup and you'll find it. There's a free version and its got an ftp program built in too!
Thanks
steve
Starting a web design business is not somthing you can just walk into with a copy of dreamweaver and a smile on your face.
You need some training, be that traditional or by teaching yourseldf via books and online training.
a good resource for the budding designer is http://www.smashingmagazine.com
Great site
We need more from home sites - perhaps you should start a forum so all us work from home moms and wannabe work from homers can support each other. Also as I am in NZ, with the time difference, I can work while most people sleep - is there a market for this?
Thanks for the helpful information. Hope to hear more from you.
I've found a few people online that have designed a site or two for me that cost under $100. This is something moms could definately do at home. Especially when the kids are in school :)
You know, I stared with web design for myself and soon found that wordpress blogs were a quick and easy way to get a site up w/o really knowing html. I've had other moms ask if I am for hire to set up a simple blog. Nothing fancy... this is something you can learn by reading and then creating your own blog or two - then you can help others!
Great post. It's not that simple to start a web design bussines. First of all you need to know many technologies like: XHTML, Ajax, Java, Php, MySQL.
After all this is so hard to get projects.
Good luck. ;)
With the internet growing everyday, this business will be great. I think I'll dive into this soon. Thank you very much!
Great post, if your good website designers can fetch a high price. And who doesn't love working from home?
