Make Money with Squidoo Lenses and Long Tail Keywords

There are a bazillion ways to make money on the Internet. But one of the easiest is creating Squidoo Lenses and profiting from the revenue generated from them. First of all, Squidoo is super easy; you can build a basic lens in about 15 minutes. And they rank high in Google's search engine results, so they're traffic magnets.

If you choose your keywords carefully, you can rank high in Google for those keywords pretty quickly. Long tail keywords, those which are more specific within a chosen niche, will generally do better. That's because there will be less competition for your terms.

Not only will you benefit from the shared revenue model of Squidoo, you can also sell affiliate products, your own Cafe Press designs, or direct traffic to your main Web site. It's all in the numbers with Squidoo. The more quality lenses you build, the more search engine traffic you will generate, and the more money you will make.

Finally, you can make money through Squidoo's own affiliate program. When someone signs up through your link and makes their first $15, you make $5. Squidoo pays through PayPal, and you can set your minimum payout as low or high as you like.

A great Squidoo resource is Seth Godin's Flipping the Funnel, available for download free from his blog. It will inspire and educate you on the concept of viral marketing using Squidoo Lenses and other Web 2.0 tools. Have a look and get Squidoo'ing!

Lisa this is a great post. I keep putting off making any lenses, but I can see that it will definitely help my blogs if I do. I have several very specific ideas in mind. Thanks again for all the great information.

You've over simplified this quite a lot here.

Although you can create a lens in 15minutes it would be avery poor effort as the key to getting your lens ranked and receiving good traffic is actually having well written, well presented, interesting information and this is just not possible in 15minutes.

Squidoo works well for me, though it has been a long learning curve to get to the stage where the revenue share from squidoo is enough to pay enough for even my internet connection.

Having said this, I do have some success with promoting products etc through affiliate links and the income from this now dwarfs the revenue sharing from squidoo. It must be stated though that my earlier attempts following a similair model to what you suggest here, creating a longtail lens with affiliate links in a short space of time, were an unmitigated failure and rarely earn more than a few cents a month, some haven't even earned that!

Thanks for the additional information, Roo. I don't pretend to be an expert on Squidoo. I know that many people are having good success with using them to drive traffic to a main site.

And you're right. You can't build a lens in 15 minutes, walk away, and expect it to generate any real revenue. But you can build a basic site, then add more and more quality content over time.

Hi Lisa, Thanks for visiting my blog post about this and commenting, and thanks for the inspiration behind the post! ;)
I hope I did achieve a balance and more detailed analysis of this squidoo myth and in the process using your blog post as an example was ok with you.

This is great information, Lisa. Another site I've found to generate income online is at http://www.flixya.com. It's a great site for sharing videos, photos and blogs and making friends! Check it out? :P

Thanks for the advice - I started writing on Squidoo mainly for writing practice, but it would be nice to draw more people in and have the option of making money.

Hi Lisa,

Referring to Roo's comment...

It is true that a 15 minute lens won't be the best, but on the other hand it is actually quite a good idea to start off with a basic lens and add the good stuff later.

Build up your lens over time, keeping it refreshed with unique content on a regular basis.

Also, it is better to build several lenses, each of which is focused on a single keyword phrase than to build a single mega lens.

Multiply your lenses and point them to different pages on your website.

I love Squidoo. It's free to join and easy to get started. You may be confuse starting out using Squidoo because it's new to you. Squidoo offers free "how to" information, tips and support. Squidoo Lensmasters are supportive, too. One of the best things is the Squidoo stats provide you detailed stats results and show the "longtail keywords" used by searchers.
