Save Money by Swapping Your Old Books
But sometimes I can't find the specific book I want at the library. And I'm too cheap to ever buy a book in hardcover. (I only buy a few paperbacks a year.) So I was excited to find some book swap sites. In the U.S., there's BookMooch and PaperbackSwap. And in the U.K., there's Read It Swap It.
I know with BookMooch, you can also send to other countries. After joining, you make a list of books you're willing to send out. You earn points when you share your books, and then you can use those points to request books from other members.
And the best part? You're saving money. Besides the cost of shipping media mail, it's free. Check it out!

I'm Listening to that Devil Music
The cartoon above made me think about a story my mom told me about the time she brought home her first Elvis record. It was the 1950's. She was probably about 16 or 17. And my grandfather, who thought Elvis was the devil incarnate, broke the 45 over his knee. What would he think about today's music? I'd love to know.

The 7 Characteristics of Super Moms
- Doesn't try to be her kids' friend. Yes, she listens. Yes, she can have fun with her kids. But there's a clear line. And the bottom line is: she's a parent.
- Doesn't live vicariously through her children. She lets them find their own interests and pursuits, and encourages them wherever possible.
- Doesn't expect perfection from herself, which is good, because it's impossible to achieve.
- Doesn't withhold love, even when her kids are being rotten. She lets them know that although she's very unhappy with their actions, she still loves them, and that's never going to change.
- Listens to her children and allows them to express themselves, even when their views don't jibe with her own.
- Doesn't spoil her kids with material possessions (no chance of that here). She also teaches her kids to be generous and not obsess over debts owed to them. After all, it is only money. And people are more important than money.
- Doesn't quit on her kids, no matter what. It's not even an option. And her kids, realizing that Mom's in it for the long haul, will not stray too far off course.

Can You Trick Yourself Into Saving Money?
I went to the grocery store last night and spent $25 on a small bag of groceries. I wasn't even buying the expensive stuff: meat, milk, detergent, etc. I am amazed at how much the cost of food has gone up in the last month or so. One goal of mine this year is to actually save some money for emergencies.
But how do you save money, when you're already struggling to pay bills, put food on the table, heat and cool your home? How do you put money aside, when there's not enough to go around in the first place? I found an article at LifeHacker that gave me some ideas.
I don't think freezing credit cards in a block of ice will help anyone. I don't use credit cards anyway. But frankly, if I wanted to use a credit card, and it was frozen in a chunk of ice, I'd run some hot water over the darn thing and get myself to the mall.
Some of the ideas did make sense though. So check it out and let me know what you think. It's Top 10 Ways to Trick Yourself Into Saving Money.

Crop Circles for Dummies

I was watching the Mel Gibson movie Signs the other night. If you've never seen it before, I'll give you a brief recap. Mel Gibson is a preacher who lives on a farm. And all of a sudden, a crop circle shows up in the middle of one of his fields.
As it turns out, the crop circles, which are showing up all over the world, are actually landing directions for the aliens that are about to invade. It's a pretty good movie until the end, when we find out...nope, better not spoil it for you.
Anyway, this struck me as funny.

Are You Too Emotionally Invested in Your Job?
I read an article yesterday at The Simple Dollar that really got me thinking. Basically, the author of The Difference Between a Job and a Career explains the difference between a job you work to put food on the table and a career. Of course, I knew there was a difference. But I never really thought about what the difference might mean in terms of emotional investment.
How much emotional energy should you invest in something if it's only a way to make money, but has no possibility of advancement? Sure, you should do the job you're getting paid to do, and to the best of your ability. But should you let it stress you out? Should you be saving that kind of energy for more important endeavors - your family, for instance?
I found the article gave me a new perspective on my work. Read it and let me know what you think.

A Home Based Business for Less than $100

Okay. So I'm not a big fan of Dr. Laura and her radio show. She's a little too preachy and abrasive for my taste. But I am a big fan of this article I found on her website. It's The 20 Best Home Businesses for Moms that You Can Start for Under $100 by Priscilla Huff.
There are some great additional resources (books and websites) listed under each business idea. And there are different categories also: business services, creative businesses, food related businesses, green businesses, home services, and personal services. As I've frequently said here on this site, services are big and will only grow in the future as the U.S. population ages. Check it out!

Back-to-School Clothes On Sale Now!

One of my daughters and I made a trip to the mall today. I remembered that last year, we waited too late to shop for back-to-school clothes. We went a few weeks into July, and the stores were already putting out fall clothes. All the great summer sales were nearly over, and it was slim pickings.
So this year, we went early. We walked into a store today just as they marked summer clothes down as much as 70%. She buys her own clothes now, for the most part, since she's a working girl. And she got 8 shirts, a pair of shorts, a dress, and a nice bag for right at $100. Not bad at all.
She'll probably sock most of it away 'til late summer, so she'll have some new duds to wear back to school. If your kids are going to need some hot weather clothes for back-to-school - it stays hot around here 'til the end of October - then get over to the mall now, before it's too late.

Do You Take Mom Time-Outs?

I found out yesterday I'm going to get an actual vacation this year. We're going to the beach in August, and I'm really excited. I've felt really burnt out lately. My kids tell me I'm repeating things, and I'm sure it's true.
I've also noticed that when I don't get enough relaxation and me-time, I get into more arguments with my teens. I'm more easily drawn into petty battles, which is definitely something to avoid, because with adolescents, you really have to pick your battles.
And then this morning, I ran across this enlightening article in the Raleigh News and Observer by Susan Calahan, Anne Nolan, and Katrin Schumann entitled Mothers Need Time-Outs Too. It noted that according to an ABC News poll, 52% of mothers say they "suffer from parental guilt - mostly because they worry they don't spend enough time with their kids."
While guilt's not my problem - my kids probably get too much Mom - I think the article makes a great point relevant for all of us: even moms need to take a time-out from time-to-time. Read the article and let me know what you think. Do you regularly schedule time for yourself? Or, like me, do your desires and needs frequently get lost in the shuffle of raising kids?
