I recently came across a term that was wholly new to me, and unless I'm way behind the curve, it probably will be to you also. It's the recently coined name for moms who do the best they can with what they have, and feel that's good enough.
They're not perfect. They make mistakes. But they love their kids, and are doing the best they can at any given moment to raise them well. Think Julia Louis Dreyfus's character in the sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine. They're "Beta Moms."
There's a great article by Sharon Jayson at USAToday.com about this new "laid-back" brand of mom, along with some signs that you might be a Beta Mom. And to these, I'll add a few of my own.
You might be a Beta Mom if:
- You sometimes serve your kids pancakes, eggs, or some other food normally reserved for breakfast at dinner.
- You cannot now, nor will you ever be able to, eat off your kitchen floor.
- Your kids are not unfamiliar with the dollar menu at McDonald's and Wendy's.
- You don't cheerfully sign up for every school fundraiser, bazaar, or field trip.
- Your homemade cookies can be broken off in little squares and plopped right onto a cookie sheet.
- Your kids are happy to find two socks in the laundry basket that belong to the same color family.
Feel free to comment with your own additions to the list.

Oh my gosh, then I am definitely a Beta Mom!!!! lol! We just had pancakes last night for dinner cause dh is out of town! You definitely CANNOT eat off my kitchen floor! I just made cookies the other night that were the little squares.... and I buy almost all white socks so that we don't have to match colors! lol!
Great post!

I found your site via MyBlogLog and thought I'd extend a quick comment. Great site, and I guarantee that when I do have children, I'll be a "Beta Dad" if that term exists. :-)
Well, it's just a huge relief for me that I'm not alone. We're in the process of house-hunting right now, and one of my biggest requirements of the new house is that you CAN'T see the kitchen from the front door, because my kitchen is ALWAYS a disaster, and I'd rather not announce that fact to everyone who comes to my front door!
hey!!hii i stumbled on ur blog in blogcatalog!! u hv a great site on the mommy theme!! love it!! keep up the good work!!
I believe that I am a 'Whatever gets me through the Night type of Mom.'
Whatever works for you...works for me... No judgement... as it is hard in the trenches... and where it, motherhood, has its great rewards, reaped daily... sometimes... sometimes.... its just nice to have the support of your fellow beta moms...
LOL hmmm maybe!
I confess I am a Beta Mom!!! :) I really like your site :)
Wow, that is so me! My son only ever has matching socks when they are brand-new and come stuck together with that plastic thingy. And we frequently eat weird stuff for dinner (cornflakes, an avocado on crackers, etc.) I´m relieved to find that I´m not the only one. :D
thank you! oh my god! how great is this! i have ben walking around for YEARS feeling bad for being a good mom! Thank you again!
My wife and I are Beta parents. All our friends are Beta parents. Our thinking is, as long as there is love in the home its all very good...

lol..this is me to a tee!
Great post! I think I am more of a slacker mom. Run and hide when they are walking around to sign people up for anyone. Used my job as an excuse why I couldn't help with fundraiser. etc.
I think somewhere between the stereotype of a mom and a beta mom seems about right. Trying hard but not getting anywhere ear where you might feel depressed is where I think we should all be with our different endevors. The mega mom thing really wears moms down after a while.
I found your site through comments on Brillig's blog and was very intrigued!
I am absolutely a beta mom.
I work outside of the home and so I get limited time with my children during the weekdays.
Hubby & I let a lot of things slide (i.e having the perfectly clean house) or go for the quick meal etc so that we can focus on our kids and get our quality time in and go and do activities together and things of that nature!
Yay for Beta moms!
Oh my goodness! This is me. We eat pancakes for dinner about once a month, and sometimes we have scrambled eggs and biscuits and gravy for dinner. (Sshh! Don't tell.)
We definitely do the fast food thing from time to time.
I actually bought the girls all white crew socks so we wouldn't have to worry about the matching socks thing.
wow with that list you nailed me to a t, I'm a beta mom. I know the aliens came and got those socks, that or the washer ate them because I know I put them in there. Kids are always wearing socks, but whether they are their's or their siblings is another story...heck my son will even put one of dad's on if I don't catch him.
Yep, I think I qualify too!
Great site ;)
I am officially a Beta Mum - it's the name of my blog!
Mum rather than Mom as I'm a Brit.
I can say yes to all those items on your list - and a lot more besides. But my kids seem fine.
Wow. I was just telling someone the other day that my floor was so dirty that if I had a child someone would call the dept. of Health and Human services on me. (Okay its not that bad- but...)
And this should interest you- single moms who work, are cooking less and less.

I was always a beta mom - except the cookie thing. Cookies, if I made them, were homemade.
That's me! Do we have an official t-shirt? And can I get it in a dark color to hide the coffee stains?
I just found this term as well. I proudly embrace my beta-ness! My kid is 13 and I lose track of her activities except in a general way, mostly to drive her hither and yon. If she needs to bring 'something', that's what the grocery is for. If she needs a costume, we go to Goodwill. I can't begin to help her with her homework -- as I forgot all my school skills the second I could -- I don't sew, can't cook, and have enough trouble keeping track of my life let alone hers. All I really do well is to love her with everything I've got. At that, I'm Alpha all the way!
I think there are a few beta dads out there too.
Even thou I worked as a chef for years before my son was born, we still make more cookies from a tub than from scratch.
